Stress is the reaction people have to excessive pressures or demands placed upon them. It arises when they worry that they cannot cope. Physical effects manifest as raised heart rate, increased sweating, headache dizziness, blurred vision, aching neck and shoulders, skin rashes, tearfulness and a lowered immune system.
Behavioural effects result in increased anxiety and irritability, a tendency to drink more alcohol and to smoke more, difficulty sleeping, poor concentration and an inability to deal calmly with every day tasks and situations. These effects are usually short-lived and cause no lasting harm.
When the pressures recede, there is a quick return to normal. Stress is not, therefore the same as ill-health. However in some cases, particularly when pressures are intense and continue for some time, the effect can be more sustained and far more damaging, leading to longer term psychological problems and ill health.
Stress management halts the progress of these debilitating symptoms and enables the client to take charge of his own life in such a way that he achieves peace of mind and a relaxed body.
