Hypnosis is a natural state of mind sometimes mistakenly thought of as sleep, unconsciousness or losing control. It is actually an altered state where the conscious mind is by-passed and the sub-conscious mind can be accessed - sometimes called focused awareness.
The sub-conscious mind is far more powerful than the conscious mind. It 'tape records' every experience. Hypnosis is a way to access emotions and to heal past events which have been repressed by the conscious mind.
