The Essiac formula originated with the Native American Ojibwa Tribe in Canada. Since Essiac became accessible in the 1920's to people outside the Ojibwa tradition, it has been used successfully both with and without medical supervision to treat several life-threatening diseases. The Essiac herbal decoction can cause a 'de- toxifying reaction'. If you come out in pimples after taking the decoction for a while or you get bad stomach cramps, 'flu-like' symptoms, a common cold or a bout of diarrhoea, you may be having a de-tox reaction - the body cannot get rid of the poisons fast enough. To help the cleansing action of Essiac, users could try to follow a diet that would support them. The following is based on a general de-tox diet which is used for many diseases. You are encouraged to stick to it as closely as possible. Even sticking to it for a short period will give Essiac a better chance to work. Substitute a glass of water (NOT tap water) for every cup of coffee or tea you normally drink. Use plenty of fresh fruit or vegetables, organic and local where possible. This adds fibre to your diet which helps normal bowel action plus important minerals and trace elements in a natural state which is important. With plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables in the diet, extra bran is not usually necessary. Exclude processed, canned or 'convenience' foods and fries. Exclude beef, pork and poultry in all forms - e.g. steaks, pies, burgers, sausages etc. Lamb is the safest meat. Use only wild caught fish, not farmed fish which is full of chemicals. Un-pasteurised milk, cheese, yoghurt are good in small quantities. Pasteurised products should be excluded. Do not drink water or anything else during a meal. Drink half an hour or so after you eat or between meals. Ideally, leave out all tea, coffee, chocolate, alcohol and tobacco. If you have difficulties doing without these items, reduce your usage as much as you can. You are encouraged to use a prayerful or meditative mindfulness at all stages of the preparation and dosage of Essiac as this enhances the benefits - just as the Ojibwa did and still do.
