(Notes taken from 'Calling of an Angel' by Doctor Gary L.Glum) The Essiac formula originated with the Native American Ojibwa Tribe in Canada. In 1922 a surgical nurse called Rene Caisse was working in a hospital in Ontario when she noticed that one of her patient's breasts was vey badly scarred. It appeared that 30 years earlier the woman had developed a growth on her breast and an Indian friend had offered to heal it with herbal medicine. After receiving a diagnosis from her doctor of advanced cancer, the woman was presented with the choice of surgery or chancing the Indian herbal medicine. The woman opted for the Indian medicine. She drank the brew everyday - her tumours gradually shrank and then disappeared. Thirty years later she was still free of cancer. Rene Caisse asked the woman for the recipe in case she should ever need it. In 1924, Rene's aunt - Mireza Potvin was diagnosed with advanced cancer of the stomach and was given six months to live. Rene, remembering the Indian remedy, obtained permission from the doctor to give it to her aunt. Mireza took the herbal brew daily for two months and gradually made a complete recovery She lived for a further twenty-one years. Rene and her aunt's doctor teamed up to treat terminal cancer patients, many of whom also proceeded to show dramatic improvement. Rene named the brew, Essiac - her name in reverse. The history of Rene Caisse and the Essiac formula makes fascinating reading. Rene was harassed and persecuted by officialdom and the pharmaceutical people for most of the rest of her life despite the testimonials of thousands of people. In 1942 she closed her clinic for fear of imprisonment but continued to work in secret from her home. She herself did a huge amount of research on the herbs with impressive results and was asked many times to do research with the pharmaceutical companies. As this meant giving up working with her patients (that was part of the agreement) she refused. Neither would she hand over the formula because from past experience the researchers had not followed the necessary procedures to the letter. Because of all the harassment she had suffered for years, she became extremely suspicious of anyone who approached her with a view to 'testing' the formula. All the documents that were in Rene's possession at the time of her death in 1978, were destroyed by the Canadian Ministry of Health and Welfare. They burned all her valuable information and research papers plus testimonials in fifty-five gallon drums behind her home. They didn't want this information to get in the hands of the public, the press or anyone else. Another person who worked with Rene was a Doctor Charles Brusch who was a personal physician to the late President John F. Kennedy. Dr Brusch worked with Rene Caisse from 1959 to 1962. He worked with thousands of cancer patients as well as with the Presidential Cancer Commission and others like Dr Armand Hammer, the American Cancer Society and the National Cancer Institute. Dr Brusch presented his findings after ten years of research, whereupon the federal government issued an order which stated effectively that either he kept quiet about his findings or he would be placed in a military prison and never heard of again. No more was heard from him. Despite all this, Essiac has survived and is being used in every state in the United States, throughout Canada, Mexico, Australia, Europe, Asia, the UK and Africa that we know of.
